The members of Mountain Run Disc Golf Club enjoyed an unseasonably warm winter day for its charity tournament held on Sunday, February 28th. The tournament, one of many "Ice Bowls" played around the U.S. each year in January and February to collect food and funds for local area food banks, was played by 16 players with 11 onlookers who came to help with the tournament and watch the fun. By the end of the day, we had three champions in three divisions, and more importantly, had collected over 130 pounds of food and raised $300 for the Culpeper Food Closet, an outreach mission of St. Stephan's Episcopal Church in Culpeper, VA.
2016 is the 30th year that disc golf Ice Bowl tournaments have been played around the country, but it was the first such tournament for our young disc golf club. Not only was it our first Ice Bowl, but the first tournament of any kind run by the club and the first disc golf tournament ever run in Culpeper County. Called an "Ice Bowl" because of the time of year it is played and the weather that often accompanies that January and February, the Mountain Run DGC Jesters saw temperatures top out around 64 degrees and not trace of frozen water in sight.
Our 16 competitors played in three divisions - one Open Professional division, and two amateur divisions, Advanced and Recreational/Novice. An 18 hole temporary course was set up at the beautiful Spilman Park, a 27-acre public park at the north end of the county that at one time was part of a large cattle farm. Numerous individuals from the disc golf community around the state of Virginia came together to make this tournament a reality by lending their time, knowledge, and equipment to help put together the course and ensure a great event for all participants. Stephen Miller, a professional disc golfer from Richmond, won the Open Division; Ryan Northcutt, from Fredericksburg, won the Amateur Advanced Division; and Chris Stahl from Winchester took home the honors for the Recreational/Novice Division.
